A cosmetics salesman loses his car and faces ruin, but his determination to recover his livelihood leads him to tackle the criminals responsible at whatever cost. With two the leading screen actors both playing against type – the debonair Todd here a mild-mannered everyman and Sellers impressive as a smooth villain (and Adam Faith as a young thief) – the film is a neglected example of British cinema’s realist turn at the start of the 60s, and makes excellent use of a variety of gritty London locations, such as Kilburn, Shepherd’s Bush and (pre-gentrification) Hoxton.
