For over 150 years, Londoners have been using ‘the tube’, usually for mundane journeys, but occasionally with unexpected or life-changing results. Writers and filmmakers have followed suit, having their characters travel, meet and sometimes undergo extreme experiences underground. This series brings together a selection of films from across eighty years in which the tube plays a significant part, although it omits the specialised genre of ‘tube horror’ that stretches from Quatermass and the Pit (1967) to Death Line (1972) and Creep (2004). The tube is rarely the main focus of fiction films, even in Sliding Doors, where it plays a crucial part in separating the heroine’s ‘two lives’, with Tube Tales a solitary exception. But the journeys and encounters that punctuate characters’ above-ground lives can introduce vital moments of chance, and provide important emotional colouring. Filming in the tube is logistically complex and expensive, with certain part-time stations regularly used to stand in for others, but the ‘reality effect’ of doing so is an important aspect of what makes films recognisably British. – Ian Christie (with special thanks to Liina Sarkinen)
